MEET THE INSTRUCTORS AT LAND ROVER
EXPERIENCE - “PASSION WITH A PURPOSE”

Today’s Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles are standard setters in their respective classes,

imbued with an unmatched heritage that endears them to their owners. But that doesn’t

mean that the two brands have stood still. Far from it, as each brand provides an appealing

blend of traditional British luxury and the most advanced technology integrated to

improve efficiency and driving pleasure and maximising safe operation. The technology

works seamlessly and, in the background, but to get the most out of all the integrated

systems, owners of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, including corporate bodies, have

taken advantage of the brand Experience Centres. They have honed their driving skills

through learning, not just about the functionality of the various driver assistance systems

that work in their cars but also about control, awareness and good driving practice.

Moulding better, safer drivers is a passion for our experienced instructors who run courses

at all our Experience Centres throughout South Africa and beyond our borders. We’d like

you to get to know a bit more about these people dedicated to passing on their

knowledge to make Jaguar Land Rover ownership even more enjoyable, rewarding and

most of all, safer.

SEAN RENTON - GENERAL MANAGER, JAGUAR LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE, JOHANNESBURG

Anyone who has had even a fleeting connection with Jaguar Land Rover across South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa will have heard of Sean Renton. Sean is like the Defender or the Jaguar XK120 of the company’s driver training team, whose experience dates back as far back as 2002 following a year with a well-known German make. Today, he oversees a substantial team of instructors in his management role, but given the stunning new Experience premises at Lonehill, that it was Sean who first recce’d this off-road site way back in the sands of time. When asked whether he preferred instructing males or females, Sean didn’t follow.

Meet Christo, also known as the “old man” of the Jaguar Land Rover team, who's has been passing on his driving knowledge since the turn of the century - firstly as a freelancer and then as an on and off-road lead instructor at Jaguar Land Rover over the past ten years.

BARRY DE OLIVEIRA - LAND ROVER LEAD INSTRUCTOR/JAGUAR TRACK SPECIALIST

Despite his name, Barry has never been a professional footballer, but he has been a freelance driving instructor since 2009, and he’s been with Jaguar Land Rover since 2011. That’s a long time in a profession that often sees lots of staff movement, but for Barry, it’s his love for cars and for Land Rover in particular that keeps him interested. Barry is also regularly assessed by UK-based instructors to keep him up-to-date and always on form.

Killian has been around cars and instructing in their use since 2006, both on-track and off-road. When asked about the relevance of track sessions with road driving, Killian's immediate response was “car control.”

Just like his colleagues Devon spent much of his formative years from 2004 as an instructor for numerous car brands before settling on Jaguar Land Rover, where he acquired the status of Lead Instructor three years ago.

MARCEL VEERAN - LAND ROVER LEAD INSTRUCTOR/SSA REPRESENTATIVE FOR BOTH BRANDS

Like many of his colleagues, Marcel started as a freelance driving instructor – in his case over ten years – and for the last six years, he’s been with Jaguar Land Rover and undertakes extensive travelling throughout the SSA network.

Andrew has been imparting his on and off-road knowledge for around eight years, of which five have been with Jaguar Land Rover, initially on a freelance basis.
RICKY HILL - SENIOR INSTRUCTOR

If ever you needed proof of the expression that says, “experience counts,” look no further than Ricky Hill, who’s been powering around on two wheels initially, since the age of four. After numerous spells in karting, Ricky steered towards driving instructor on a freelance basis, saying that nothing suited him better than to drive cars and travelling to do so. Often on the sub-Sahara Africa circuit, conducting Ride ‘n Drives on public roads for customers of local importers Ricky believes that the expertise afforded to our customers plays a role in closing deals and generating brand loyalty.

Rainer worked as a freelancer with various major manufacturers from around 2011 and included supercar driving and general driving dynamics in his portfolio. He joined Jaguar Land Rover as a freelancer in 2011 and became a permanent Experience staff member in around 2017.
SHAUN TAYLOR - SENIOR INSTRUCTOR

SHAUN TAYLOR - SENIOR INSTRUCTOR

Shaun has practised his trade as a freelancer for five years, spending three years with Jaguar Land Rover, where he instructs on and off-road techniques covering both brands.

Every year, Jaguar Land Rover EXPERIENCE instructors from around the world are invited

to the TREK event at Eastnor Castle in the UK – the spiritual home of Jaguar Land Rover - to

participate in a series of challenges that promote the sharing of knowledge and

experiences. The overall TREK 2019 champions were Ricky Hill and Devon Scott from

South Africa.
